Setup
Context
Comsys has developed a 350V Direct Current installation with rooftop solar at the Blix Solutions datacenter in Oslo, Norway. Blix’s goal was to be more energy efficient and to include renewable energy thanks to a DC power system. PV production is prioritized, and when it’s necessary, rectifiers provide energy from the main grid. Additionally, heat recovery was implemented by Blix to provide heating to the entire building as to the neighborhood as the data center capacity will grow.
Implementation
Benefits
Maximum energy efficiency and no conversion loss
No energy loss at night
Flexibility and ease of installation
Quote
« The installation is one-of-a-kind as it powers part of the data center with direct current, achieving the highest possible efficiency in the electrical chain from the solar panels to the processors in the servers. As data centers continue to be one of the fastest-growing electricity consumers in the world, surpassing even large industries such as aviation or water-treatment, it’s crucial to find sustainable energy solutions. Our solar installation not only provides a potential for significant savings, but also bypasses all the conversions between direct current and alternating current that occur in conventional installations, maximizing the total energy efficiency and also the business case. »
