Context

DC Muzen is a full-scale residential DC demonstrator developed by Harry Stokman to test how a Current/OS-based microgrid can support the electrification of a home in real-life conditions.

The project integrates solar generation, battery storage, EV charging, heating, lighting and household loads within a common DC architecture.

Beyond the home itself, it explores the technical, regulatory and ecosystem requirements for wider deployment and provides a first building block for the broader “Second Grid” concept.

Implementation

• 40 kW standalone DC microgrid, based on Current/OS and designed as a multi-vendor installation.

• 350 VDC distribution throughout the home, alongside an AC microgrid.

• 90 × 475 Wp photovoltaic panels, with one DC/DC converter per panel and approximately 30 MWh/year of solar production. The PV system is power-clamped to 27 kW.

• 114 kWh battery energy storage system directly connected to the DC distribution.

• 30 kW DC semi-fast EV charging, complemented by AC EV charging from the AC microgrid.

• Two grid interfaces: a 1 kW unidirectional interlink converter and an 11 kW bidirectional interlink converter.

• 12 kW geothermal water-to-water HVAC system, combined with low-temperature floor heating and approximately 100 kWh of thermal storage using phase-change materials.

• Six local 48 V distribution panels supplying PoE lighting, USB-C sockets, IoT devices and other low-voltage loads.

• Distributed energy management based on local devices and voltage signals, with no central EMS or cloud-based power control.

• The architecture is prepared for connection to a future Second Grid, extending the principles demonstrated in the individual home to a local Physical Energy Community.

Benefits

• Enables the home to be energy-neutral for approximately 350 days per year, according to project data.

• Reduces annual grid electricity consumption to an estimated 400 kWh, while supporting heating, household electricity and approximately 40,000 km/year of EV mobility.

• Reduces calculated annual energy-related CO₂ emissions from approximately 12,000 kg to 160 kg, based on the project methodology for heating, electricity and mobility. 260323 DC Muzen short-compressed

• Reduces calculated raw energy consumption from approximately 64 MWh to 0.67 MWh per year.

• Demonstrates how solar generation, electrical storage, thermal storage, EV charging and building loads can operate as one integrated local energy system.

• Uses local, distributed control rather than a central cloud-based EMS, reducing dependency on remote services for power management.

• Provides a real-world platform to test Current/OS interoperability, DC protection, solid-state protection, installation practices and multi-vendor integration.

• Establishes a practical building block for the larger Second Grid / Physical Energy Community, where shared DC infrastructure could support EV charging, community storage, solar generation and heating while helping relieve congestion on the existing AC grid.
